The housing crisis is a global challenge that requires innovative, inclusive, and sustainable solutions. From urban centers grappling with skyrocketing rents and displacement to rural areas suffering from neglect and depopulation, housing is both a pressing need and a platform for transformative change. This report, Rock the Block: Integrated Participatory Roadmaps for Affordable Co-Living, presents a curated collection of 15 exemplary housing and community projects from across the globe. Each case study highlights diverse approaches to governance, finance, design, and community building, offering valuable insights for addressing housing challenges in Egaleo, Athens, and beyond.
This report serves as a foundational resource for the Rock the Block initiative, led by the Municipality of Egaleo under the European Urban Initiative–Innovative Actions program. It aims to inform and inspire the development of partici-
patory co-living models in Egaleo by showcasing how housing can move beyond private property and toward cooperative and collective frame-works. The report seeks to support a cultural shift in Greece, where home ownership has long
been seen as the dominant housing paradigm. By illustrating the potential of cooperative models to achieve greater impact, this report addresses the question: What is needed to foster this cultural change?
