The Municipality of Egaleo, an integral part of the Western Sector of Athens in the Attica region, spans 6.45 square kilometers and is historically significant as the former capital of Western Attica. Originally a working-class settlement for refugees in the early 20th century, Egaleo evolved into an industrial center and subsequently a densely populated suburban area.

Its population peaked at 82,000 in 1981, following a period of substantial growth between 1940 and 1971. However, de-industrialization in the 1980s led to a transition from manufacturing to service industries, exacerbating urban development disparities between Western Athens and other regions within the Attica metropolitan area. The primary land uses in Egaleo encompass residential, commercial, recreational, and community services. The establishment of metro stations and the municipality's advantageous location have spurred commercial expansion, attracting significant regional investments such as major shopping centers. Today, Egaleo confronts urban challenges, including environmental concerns and the imperative for strategic

spatial planning and urban regeneration.

This report focuses on several interconnected key themes that shape Egaleo’s

urban and socio-economic landscape. These themes include historical evolution, population dynamics, economic transformations, urban planning challenges, social disparities, and the role of institutional frameworks in addressing these issues in Egaleo and West Athens more broadly.
